Homecare packages or HCP provide the aging Australian population with an opportunity to access comprehensive in-home care services within their budget. The packages are for seniors with complex needs, and their requirements cannot be fulfilled by the government's Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP).

1. Homecare packages are available in four different levels

Since the needs of every senior are different, service providers offer HCP in four different levels- Level 1(basic care needs), Level 2 (low care needs), Level 3 (intermediate care needs), and Level 4 (higher care needs). The support offered in each HCP increases with level. For example, support under home care package level 1 will be less than homecare package level 2. The complexity of services and hours of care also increases at each level.

That's right, to avail of homecare packages subsidy, it's important to qualify for the Aged Care Assessment Test (ACAT). Only after successful completion of the test, you get to know if you are eligible for HCP, and the package you are eligible for.

However, before choosing a service provider, ensure that they are part of the government's subsidised program so that you can avail of the subsidy benefit in a hassle-free manner. Once you've selected the aged care, the funds for HCP are paid every month to the service provider. 

4. You can switch to different home care packages 

The requirements of seniors often change with time, which is why you can switch to an appropriate package based on your present needs. Let's say, if your loved one qualified for HCP level 1, but later was diagnosed with a life-changing disorder and needs home care package level 3, you can apply for a reassessment via ACAT and switch to a suitable HCP.
